With the weather warming up and the end of the semester right around the corner, spring is the perfect time to get a fresh start by doing some decluttering. Throughout the school year, things tend to pile up around student dorms and apartments, and living spaces can easily be taken over by clutter. By taking some time for spring cleaning, you’ll be doing yourself a big favor; in addition to freeing up space, you’ll also make things a lot easier on yourself if you need to move out at the end of the semester. In addition, you’ll ensure that your living space is nice and organized as it comes time for finals, making it a much better study space. To get started on your decluttering, consider some of the following items that you might want to throw out or give away.

1. Textbooks

If you don’t consistently rent and return your textbooks, then you probably have at least a few from previous semesters that you no longer need, and are only taking up space in your room. Go through any of the books that you have and determine what you can get rid of. You can even make some money off of these old textbooks by selling them back to your school’s bookstore or selling them online. Once other students have figured out their schedules for the coming semester, you can also try selling your old, unneeded books to students who are going to be taking those classes. Whatever you decide to do with them, getting rid of the textbooks that you no longer need can free up a lot of useful space in your dorm or apartment!

2. Old Assignments

If you’re the kind of person who likes to keep old assignments lying around, or just forgets to throw them away, take a look around your dorm or apartment for any papers and homework assignments that you no longer need. You may also want to go through any notebooks or folders that you keep for your classes, as there may be old papers in them that it’s not necessary to keep for your courses anymore. This goes for physical papers and for the assignments stored up on your computer as well. Just as having piles of paper lying around will take up space in your dorm or apartment, having a bunch of old projects, essays, and homework assignments saved on your computer can make your desktop cluttered. In addition to freeing up space, going through these items will also make it easier for you to focus on your current assignments, as you’ll have less papers and files in the way to distract you.

3. Built-Up Clutter on Your Desk

Especially mid-way through the semester when most students are too busy to tidy up consistently, a lot of clutter tends to build up on desks and other surfaces, such as counters and nightstands. Take some time to go through the papers and other items that are crowded onto these surfaces; in doing so, you’ll probably free up a lot of space that you forgot you had! Take a critical eye to your clutter and throw out what you can; then, with the rest of it, try to devise some sort of organization system to get everything out of the way and to prevent further clutter from piling up.

4. Old Clothes

Spring is always a great time to go through your closet and get rid of the items that you no longer wear—of which there will almost always be at least some. Think about the items that you didn’t wear during the winter; if you didn’t wear them this year, that probably means that they’re ready to be given away. Take the time to go through your spring and summer wardrobe as well, as there may be items that you know you won’t be wearing as the weather warms up.

5. Toiletries and Makeup that You Don’t Use

Many students tend to ignore the items in that build up throughout the school year in their medicine cabinets; if you don’t regularly go through and get rid of the toiletries or makeup items that you never use, you’re likely to find that some of them have expired. Go through the cabinets in your bathroom to throw out anything that is past its expiration date, as well as items that you just never got around to using. If you’ve had something for months and it hasn’t been used, chances are it never will be.

When you’re living in a relatively small space such as a dorm or apartment, keeping it clean and decluttered becomes essential. To prevent your space from becoming disorganized and difficult to live in, do some decluttering now, before you get caught up in the craziness of the end of the semester. Even if you only end up getting rid of a few items, clearing up even a little bit of space can make a huge difference!
